5 Term Year -
Please read the important highlighted section of this page at least.
As members will be aware the LA announced both locally and nationally in October that from 2013/14 Nottingham City schools would move to a 5 term year pattern on the basis of an unconvincing ‘survey’ carried out mostly over the schools Summer break.
The overwhelming response of teachers and other school staff (many of whom are also parents) was one of anger and dismay.
The NUT alongside other unions has challenged both the justification for this move and the process being used. We have represented the views of our members to the LA and are petitioning jointly with other unions across all our schools.
The pressure we have bought to bear so far has has forced the LA to accept that it must formally consult the trade unions and they have rename 2013/14 dates as indicative rather than confirmed as they previously had been.
Nottingham NUT has sought and been granted a ballot from the national headquarters of the NUT to be run by the Electoral Reform Society on the issue.
Please Note: The ballot is expected to run between 15th February and 7th March.
A strong ‘YES’ vote in this indicative ballot would greatly strengthen our hand in negotiations with the City Council. We need to make sure the LA cannot discount our view, so make sure you use your vote. The more convincing the result the better chance we have of defeating the 5 year plan.
IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT BOTH THE TURNOUT IS HIGH
AND THE YES VOTE IS STRONG.
Please note that ONLY members working in Nottingham City schools will be balloted.
Even though Academies may decide to follow the City holiday pattern, only employees of the City Council could take lawful industrial action to resist their changes. Any industrial action to prevent an Academy from changing holiday pattern would be subject to a separate ballot and would be a dispute with the academy governors. This will be considered if and when it becomes necessary.
What do you need to do?
1. Check that your membership details are correct by looking on www.teachers.org.uk
2. Make sure you have returned your ballot paper by date stated on it.
3. Contact the office if you would like someone to come into your school to meet members.
